Education system in the United States of America

The United States of America is very populated. It has a total of 50 states. The USA is also a better and best country to work, as it has some of the most reputable companies in the world. If someone is going to get settled in the USA, they must think about the education of their children. The education program in the USA is known to be one of the best educational programs in the world. The way of learning in the schools of the USA is a bit different as compared to other western countries. They focus more on practical knowledge rather than a theoretical one. Also, the USA spends more money on education for a student than any country in the world. It is one of the reasons why the education system of the USA is known to be one of the best.

The Literacy rate in the United States of America is approximately 99 percent. Due to a law that assembles its citizens to have the necessary primary education. This state law enforces every student of age ranging between 6-8 years to 16-18 years must get educated. Although this does not apply for pre-schools and the delineate varies from state to state. Private, public, and home schools are available in the United States Of America. The majority of the students in the United States (approx 87%) go to state-owned or public schools. The other part of the students (approx 10%) goes to private schools and rest to the home schools.

K–12 Education

In some states, students can leave school with parental permission between the ages of 14–17. However, other students need to remain in school until age 18. Public education is free usually runs from kindergarten to grade 12 (K–12). 

Most parents send their children either to a public or to a private institution. One-tenth of the students enrolled in private schools according to government statistics. Approximately 85 per cent of students attend public schools. 

As they are tax-subsidized, tax burdens differ from region to region. School districts are separate from other local authorities, with administrators and budgets distinct. Often, there are mandatory tests for K–12 public school systems. Usually through a board of trustees, state colleges, and universities.

Private schools are generally free to determine their curriculum. Available through independent regional accreditation authorities, although some state regulations can apply.

Pre to Primary School

The education of the child in the USA usually carries on from the age of 5 to 6 years. The pre-school is known as Kindergarten schools.

Primary education for the students generally starts at the age of 6 to 7 years. This stage is also known as Elementary School. And in many areas provided free of cost by the government. Elementary school starts or begins from the first grade to the fifth grade.

Secondary School

Secondary school also belongs to Middle School or Junior High school. Middle High School usually begins from the age of eleven to twelve years and lasts for three years. Middle School starts from the sixth grade to the eighth grade. This type of Secondary School education is also free of charge in the United States.

High School or Senior High School

High School is the most necessary part of education. It decides the phase for a student to choose the career they want. High school usually starts at the age of fourteen or fifteen years and ends in around eighteen years. High schools allow students to choose their core subjects.

The senior high school here often belongs to graduation or college. This stage makes students study their respective subjects in colleges or universities. Also, students can lead to masters as well after completing their college or university.

School hours and terms

  • The school starts in September and runs until May or June (nine months).
  • Most of the schools use the two-semester system. September to December and spring January to May.
  • Some schools follow the quarter system. It comprises three sessions. September to December, January to March and March to May or June.

The school day in elementary and high schools completes between 8 am to 3 pm. 


Students ought to go through any of the wellness tests before joining some of the schools in the USA. Students need to go through some of the health checks to prevent or control the transmission of disease.

The range of diseases includes :

  • DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis or whooping cough).
