Hospitals in the Netherlands

Some of the hospitals in the Netherlands are Radboundumc, UMC Utrecht, and Academic Medical Center.

Medical facilities in the Netherlands are many. Under the new Dutch healthcare system, the government is encouraging hospitals to specialize when, before, they all provided the same set of services.

The Netherlands has excellent health care services for its citizens. Both private and public health care are available in the country. Public health care in the country is available freely or at a significantly lower cost for its citizens. The general taxation system funds public health care in the country. To avail the public healthcare services, citizens must have a permanent residence card.

Hospital Types

In the Netherlands, there are three main types of hospitals:

Academic hospitals

In the Netherlands, prominent universities have formed partnerships with academic medical institutes. The Netherlands has eight prestigious medical institutions where leading researchers and doctors work together. They are better equipped to provide specific treatment.

Teaching hospitals

When it comes to the education of future doctors and nurses, teaching hospitals collaborate with academic medical institutes. Some more specialist treatments are available, and medical interns may observe or assist with some operations.

General hospitals

When treating less complex illnesses, general hospitals are adequate, if not ideal. In extreme cases, they will direct patients to other, more specialist centers.
