You have the legal right to seek refuge. You must have concrete reasons to fear persecution in your native country in order to qualify for asylum. These reasons could be related to your race, religion, or nationality, for example. In addition, if you are in danger of significant harm in your native country, you may be eligible for international protection. If you leave your country solely for economic or personal reasons, you will not be regarded as a refugee or person in need of subsidiary protection, and you will not be granted asylum.
How to apply for asylum?
You can request asylum at the migration official at the border or any point of entry (e.g. airport) in Aruba by filling out a form in the preferred language. If you are already on the island, you can schedule an appointment with the Department of Integration and Management and Admission of Foreigners to apply for asylum.
Asylum applications are free of charge. You should not be charged or asked to pay anything in connection with your asylum application. If you are asked to make a payment at any point during the procedure, please notify UNHCR.
