You can search for a medical practitioner together ‘in your village name’ or ‘near your town name’, or “, your province”.

Here below is an example of searching ‘Clinic in Kandahar’ in English.

Here below is an example of searching ‘doctor in Nuristan province’ in Persian.

Healthcare system in Afghanistan

Healthcare in Afghanistan should be free, or at least affordable, for Afghani people. But years of war have destroyed the healthcare system. Mortality among young children is still one of the highest in the world. Mortality among women giving birth is also high.

Primary care is healthcare that is provided at a local small clinic by a medical practitioner. Primary healthcare services should continue to be provided free of charge at clinics throughout the country. Maternal and child healthcare are therefore supposed to be free. But patients who seek primary care in national hospitals can pay a fixed fee. This is in an effort to make people go to clinics first instead of hospitals.

But Healthcare in clinics is poor. People are not well followed therefore they get sicker. So they end up paying more when they go to a private hospital or clinic.

The Basic Health Services Program, currently implemented by the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), consist of seven main elements:

  • Maternal and neonatal safety
  • Child safety and immunization
  • Safe education
  • Communicable disease prevention
  • Mental wellbeing
  • Disabilities
  • Important medication.

The main problems with the public healthcare system in Afghanistan:

  • an inadequate, even missing, infrastructure;
  • a health system that is top-heavy with doctors who are not qualified to deal with priorities, community-level issues and who lack publicity;
  • A shortage of practical, usable, and unorganized management decision-making information systems.
