Work and employment in Bulgaria

Bulgaria contains two types of employment contracts: 

  • the temporary contract and the permanent contract. 
  • There is no smallest term to the temporary employment contract, but a largest term of three years. Some case is:
  • a seasonal or short-term job (less than three years)
  •  performed a particular task 
  • replacing an employee who is sick or on maternity leave
  • replacing an employee who is away to an examination
  • for a mandate.

Social Security

In Bulgaria contributions to social health insurance are the responsibility of the employers. As for the auto-entrepreneurs, they share this responsibility with the State. The Bulgarian Social Security System covers four areas: sick leave and maternity leave, retirement leave, accidents and occupational illnesses, and unemployment. A health insurance program and pension insurance also feature in Bulgaria’s social security. Contributions made to the various programs are then split between the employer and the employee. The result is also announced in the Social Insurance Code. Accidents and illnesses are the responsibility of employers themselves. The mandatory health insurance is getting funded by both parties, that of the employee being deducted from his monthly salary.
